Makeup Revew: essence How to Make Nude Eyes Makeup Box

The essence How to Make Nude Eyes Makeup Box is 6-shadow palette designed to make it easy to do at least 2 nude/neutral looks. It comes with 2 instructional cards for a day and night look, as well as a dual-tipped applicator.

So at the essence Fall/Winter 2015 preview, this palette was labelled one of the new products to hit shelves this month. In that post, I mentioned that some things were re-promos. After much speculation and discussion, I've come to the conclusion that it isn't "new" but definitely is new to Canada. Maybe I'm wrong though.

There are 6 shades in this palette, all of which contain shimmer:
  • Eye Light Beige, white-beige
  • Go for Gold, yellow gold
  • An Eye for Apricot, peachy champagne
  • All About Nude, purple-taupe
  • Nude Night Out, neutral dark brown
  • Team Nude, warm bronze

essence eyeshadows continually surprise me with their pigmentation and softness. Though this palette is definitely one of the cheaper ones out there (at $10 CAD), the eyeshadow quality is great and rivals some high end shadows. Despite the heavy shimmer, the shadows don't feel gritty at all.

The two most surprising shades out of this palette were Go for Gold and All About Nude. Go for Gold looks really dull in the pan, but comes off as true gold on me. While it doesn't compare to Urban Decay's Half Baked, it's still a good gold eyeshadow. As for All About Nude, I expected it to be a neutral grey but it's more of a purpley, lilacy grey. I'm a fan of purpley taupes so lots of love for this one.

Where you can see the lower quality is in the amount of fallout, which for me were most evident in Nude Night Out and Team Nude. I haven't tested out how long these shadows lasts without a primer, but with Too Faced's Shadow Insurance primer underneath, these last crease- and fade-free for about 8 hours. But perhaps that's a testament to the primer and not the shadows themselves.

Once again, essence offers a great starter kit for neutral eyeshadows. Between the previously reviewed All About Chocolates palette and this one, I prefer this one but only for its overall cooler tone. Both are great palettes with some great variability on the cheap.

Have you tried essence eyeshadows? What do you think?
